Shelter Distilling - Montrose: A Culinary Gem in the Heart of Colorado

Absolutely LOVE this place! The truffle fries are to die for, and every single meal I’ve had here has been the best in town. Beautiful seating overlooking the river, dog-friendly patio, and an awesome staff that always makes you feel welcome. The beer is excellent—Get Lost Lager is my favorite and has become a go-to beverage with my friend when we head to the lake. Can’t recommend this place enough!

An all around wonderful place to eat and relax! This is my favorite place in Montrose, hands down. Excellent, unique food, great atmosphere, and the absolute best beer and excellent mixed drinks. Everyone is always friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend!

Love this place! I recently organized a high school reunion and MG went above and beyond to help make sure our group had a great time and everything we needed. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I dropped off a box of decorations and they went right to work making it look amazing! Our group had a great time. We will definitely return.

Stayed here as a Harvest Host. Very quiet location, food and drinks were wonderful. We stopped into settles from travels and grabbed a few drinks and dinner before retiring to our spot to sleep for the night. Live music was great and service was good too. You can order through a tab you manage on your phone or through a server. We had already started a tab through our phone at the bar but transferred for the views outside and just maintained the tab. Kind of a nice way to be able to enjoy the entire facility. If you haven't been don't sleep on this spot.

While I could talk about the excellent food and great proportions, I want to really commend Kaden our server. Young kid that's super attentive, extremely helpful, and respectful. Really made being there for brunch with my family super enjoyable. Definitely be back soon for the food and drinks, hope he's able to help us again. For those that only care about food and drink, the brunch dishes were fantastic and I really enjoyed the Arnold Palmer. Kids loved the stuffed French toast.

Gorgeous, delicious salads and selection of food for diverse appetites! Of course, the vibe is nice being right by the river… We’ve visited several times and have noted improvements - you can now order directly with the wait staff (or can order on your phone)! It seems the only issue now is having enough support for busy times. You can tell they are trying, but when the place fills up towards dinner, plan to wait a bit longer. If you have time to spare, you’ll definitely enjoy your experience!

Opening Weekend: Just opened and has wonderful potential. The building is beautiful and is in a fantastic location. My husband had the Bison Onion Smashburger ($18) and Truffle Fries ($3) which were both very good. We attempted to eat the Yellow Fin Ahi Tostada ($17.50). Although not described as spicy on the menu, the majority of the tuna was soaked in chili crisp oil and then dusted in ground cayenne pepper (see photo). The staff was polite albeit a bit nervous as they spilled drinks on both myself and my husband. The beverages were inconsistent. The Strawberry Lemonade ($6) I ordered off the mock-tail menu was sickly sweet, served in a highball glass and the Spicy Margarita ($13) was meh. The gem of the craft cocktails was the HoneyDUDE ($13). Overall, we are excited about the potential of Shelter Distilling. We will be back and look forward to trying it again in the future. First Update May 2024: We returned on Memorial Day. My husband had the Joe Burger and I had the Philly Cheesesteak. Both were good. Food and drink delivery were efficient. As during our previous trip, we had trouble getting a to go box despite flagging front staff and requesting it. After 15 mins I just walked out with my leftovers in a napkin. Overall wonderful atmosphere and good selection of food and beverages. Second Update May 2025: Returned twice over the weekend. The menu has been updated, the service was better and they have responded to the feedback from the community. I like ordering on the app but it was nice to physical menus for those that need them as well. The menu has also been updated since they opened and works well for groups with varying tastes.
